Household remedies
- Warmth is a powerful all-round treatment for menstrual pain. A hot water bottle on the lower abdomen can help soothe uterine cramps. A heating pad, heat pillow or hot water bottle also relieves lower back pain. If possible, indulge yourself in a warm bath, or simply a hot shower: the heat encourages circulation to the cramped muscles and helps relax them.
- Herbal tea can help relax cramped muscles and relieve pain. Try chamomile, red raspberry, or ginger. Certain herbal oils have been used for thousands of years for the relief of menstrual cramps, including basil, chamomile, cypress, ginger, jasmine, juniper, and lavender.
- Comfortable clothes help you feel more relaxed. Wear your most comfortable clothes. Ensure that the waistband of your skirt, jeans or trousers is not too tight. If professional demands mean that you have to wear formal attire, simply hide your comfortable clothes under a more conservative jacket.
- Massage relaxes tense muscles and improves circulation. If a professional massage is unavailable, a simply shoulder-rub from a friend can work wonders. In Chinese medicine, applying even pressure to the muscle between the base of the thumb and forefinger helps reduce menstrual pain.
