What is menstrual pain?

"I've got better things to do than lie on the couch and suffer every month."

The pain that most women experience before and during menstruation is the result of muscle contractions in the uterus and surrounding organs. These contractions are a natural part of the menstrual cycle. The uterine muscles contract to help the surplus lining of the uterus to detach from the walls of the uterus.

The pain of menstrual cramps can be made worse by other factors, including:

  • hormonal changes
  • a magnesium deficiency
  • a deficiency of essential fatty acids
  • a vitamin B6 deficiency

Every woman's experience of menstruation is unique. Typically, menstrual pain is felt in the lower abdomen. Some women also feel pain in the lower back. Menstrual pain is often accompanied by headache, fatigue, bloating, irritability and sensitivity to pain.
